TODOS SANTOS
A MAGICAL TOWN ON THE PACIFIC COAST
Located an hour north of Cabo San Lucas on the western side of the Baja Peninsula, Todos Santos is a mecca for artists, wanderers, and those called to the sea. Nestled between the deep and raucous blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, this Pueblo Mágico—a designation given by the Mexican government to towns with notable cultural and historical significance—offers an immersive, soul-stirring experience that blends cultural heritage, creativity, and unspoiled beauty.
Colonized by the Jesuits in the 18th century, Todos Santos prospered through sugarcane production before that industry collapsed in the mid-20th century. But it never lost its charm. And now Todos Santos has reemerged, in recent decades, as a darling of artists, surfers, and those seeking a slower, more creative way of life. The historic town center is a visual delight: restored colonial buildings painted in earthy tones, bougainvillea-covered façades, and cobbled streets that lead to art galleries, boutique hotels, and cafés. There's a palpable creative energy here, not loud or performative but rather thoughtful, inviting, and rooted in the region’s history.
The landscape adds to the mystical nature of Todos Santos. Wide, windswept beaches stretch along the coast—some ideal for surfing, others untouched and nearly empty. Inland, desert arroyos and palm groves give way to hiking trails and farmland that supports a burgeoning farm-to-table movement. Todos Santos is less about amenities in the traditional sense, and more about the richness of experience: morning surf sessions, afternoon gallery visits, evening mezcal tastings, and stargazing under velvet skies at the beach.
For those drawn to cultural richness, artistry, and a sense of peaceful detachment from the ordinary, Todos Santos offers an experience that can't be manufactured and rather simply lived.
